A little blast from the past for you, the 1994 Contract With America.

This year’s election offers the chance, after four decades of one-party control, to bring to the House a new majority that will transform the way Congress works. That historic change would be the end of government that is too big, too intrusive, and too easy with the public’s money. It can be the beginning of a Congress that respects the values and shares the faith of the American family.

Like Lincoln, our first Republican president, we intend to act “with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right.” To restore accountability to Congress. To end its cycle of scandal and disgrace. To make us all proud again of the way free people govern themselves.

The Heritage Foundation :

[..]The Contract itself emerged publicly with the staging of the mass signing of the Contract on the steps of the U.S. Capitol by 367 candidates for office on September 27, 1994. On that day, all of these candidates publicly pledged: “If we break this Contract, throw us out.” The Republicans who were already Members of the House of Representatives organized themselves into 11 working groups that eventually drafted ten bills that made up the Contract.

Getting past the part that that we do torture people and our leader continues to lie straight faced about it…
The bullshit meter doesn’t even bother to show up anymore to these gaggles. So thank the lord for Ann Compton.

Snow said that Cheney does not comment on specific interrogation techniques and is “not a guy who slips up.” ABC’s Ann Compton countered that Cheney “did go up and curse a senator to his face on the Senate floor and accidentally shot his friend.”

(Not funny.)

He has simply slunk into a mire of ridiculousness, refusing to admit that Iraq is his baby and threatening the sprouting of new Islamic empires from Spain to Indonesia. It was actually hard not to laugh.

Then you remember that hundreds of thousands of innocent people are dead because this half-wit is in the White House and you realise it’s really not funny at all.

(Friday funnies?)
Every once in a while you need a refresher on just how frighteningly bizarre the intellect of the President really is.

Then he goes on: “I believe when you get attacked and somebody declares war on you, you fight back. And that’s what we’re doing.” Of course, this ignores the fact that Iraq did not declare war on us [or attack us] — but it’s been so long now, maybe he’s just forgotten.

A critical moment arrives when Bush announces, “And I’m trying to figure out a matrix that says things are getting better. I think that one way to measure is less violence than before, I guess.

Behold the pure pathology of the White House apparatus. Just skipped right past flip flopping by denying their position ever existed. This is off the Rove chart for assumption of public gullibility. And a media, jaded by the ever present and daily deluge of Republican bullshit, barely bats an eye.

Yesterday Bush emphatically stated “we’ve never been stay the course”.
Today with equal zeal his chief counsel Dan Bartlett said the same thing “we’ve never been stay the course”.
Thankfully Think Progress has clipped a nice montage of “Stay the Course” (below the Bartlett video).

“He leads in a way that the good Lord tells him is best for our country,” said Marine General Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I’m confused, Rumsfeld is the medium who translates the Lords wishes to Bush? I thought he got his marching orders direct from the source. Or was it the generals on the ground?

Step 1:
Fire the investigators.

Step 2:
see Step 1

House Appropriations chairman Jerry Lewis (R-CA) is under federal investigation for possible improprieties in how he oversaw Congress’ spending of $900 billion annually. Yesterday, we reported that Lewis had dropped nearly $800,000 in legal fees to defend himself against the probe.

This evening, Congressional Quarterly reports (sub. req.) that in a round of calls Monday evening, Lewis fired 60 investigators who had worked for his committee rooting out fraud, waste and abuse, effective immediately. As in, don’t bother coming in on Tuesday.
[...]
Lewis’ decision “has in fact stalled all of the investigations on the staff,” said one of the contractors, a former FBI agent, who asked not to be identified. “This eviscerates the investigatory function. There is little if any ability to do any oversight now.”
[...]
“In effect, no investigative function is going to be done,”

Logs opened? More like flood gates opened. The mother load of influence peddling is about to be exposed. If you thought Abramoff, Ney, and Foley were bad, stay tuned. Of coarse this is just my opinion but they have been ferociously protecting these records from the public for five years. What should be most interesting is the insight that will confirm the speculation of the real level of Cheney’s power and who is really running the show. The backdraft is gearing up for the explosion.

Independence Day (1996)

SUMMARY

Evil aliens come from far away and start blowing up everything and trying to kill everyone. Though it’s not explicitly stated in the screenplay, it seems likely that they hate our freedom. There’s no use negotiating with them. You’re either with us or you’re with the murderous space aliens.

CONSERVATIVE MESSAGES

Bad creatures, not really humans, are coming from outside our borders to kill us all. Appeasement and negotiation are ineffective strategies.

Bill Pullman sort of looks like President George W. Bush. Sooooort of.

ANTI-CONSERVATIVE MESSAGES

Despite his resemblance to Bush, Pullman behaves differently. He actually flies military airplanes in real combat situations, assembles a large international coalition for something that everyone can agree on (world saving), pulls back the troops when it’s clear that the prevailing military strategy is not working, and fires the secretary of defense, who turns out to be this total dick that everyone hates.
