Let’s ignore for a moment that she apparently thinks the President (which she assumes she’ll be) has some law peeps that just, make shit disappear, cause it’s the President and all, y’know, mavericky stuff. OK, ignoring all that, let’s just focus on the fact that… there is no “Department of Law”!

When does this “she’s a smart cookie, wink!” game end?

It’s an ignorant way of saying that the White House staff does try to cover-up shenanigans for the president. It’s not like she has to look too far back in history to see White House attempts to cover up what would be considered ethics breaches and treason (Valerie Plame). It also ignorantly – and she didn’t mean this when she said it, but it can be implied – assumes the party has her back. Congress enabled crimes by the past administration “in order to keep us safe” among other things. Every time the President pushed the limits, congress made it easier to do so by bending the rules.

But that’s 2001-2006. Things have changed since the opposition party took control. Even if Palin were to capture the White House, I don’t think congress would just roll over if she broke the law.

true, but the context here was that her “Department of Law” would make pesky rumors and allegations – and supposedly those who make them – go away. Sort of a Bush Doctrine preemption of thought “crimes”. And where would they “go”?

True enough, absolute true enough… And the last thing we need is someone like her at the wheel to make things like this come to life.
